A Pilates lesson involves preparation and participation from both client and instructor. Whether you’re brand-new to it or a seasoned pro, there are a few things to keep in mind when gearing up for your upcoming session.
1. Avoid eating before your lesson.
Doing Pilates on a full stomach can be a miserable experience. It’s difficult to engage your abdominals when you’re full, and the exercises can be uncomfortable or even impossible. If you need to eat before, choose a small, light portion so you are not full when you arrive. After your session, enjoy nourishing your body with a healthy meal.
2. Come with an open mind and a desire to work.
Some clients approach Pilates with a mindset of “going through the motions.” Often, a client who comes to class frequently but isn’t fully present will miss a vital point. Set aside distractions and be open to approaching things differently, even if it’s something you know or have done before. A coachable client who listens to his or her instructor makes the experience more rewarding for everyone involved.
3. Have fun.
Pilates instructors can be very serious, but we still like to have fun and laugh. Don’t take yourself too seriously and don’t be afraid to try. It’s human nature to get down on ourselves when we’re struggling with an exercise, but practicing and being consistent will help you improve. Stay the course and enjoy the journey!
Observing these key points will ensure your Pilates lesson is pleasant and fulfilling. When your body is ready to move and your mind is ready to work, you’ll know you are prepared for a great session
